Griffonia
GRIFFONIA
Botanical name: Griffonia simplicifolia Habitat: Africa
Plant parts used: ripe seeds Active ingredients and nutrients: 5-hydroxytryptophan
Therapeutic properties: the seeds of this plant are source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a natural amino acid precursor of serotonin, the neurotransmitter able to improve mood and involved in the regulation of sleep and appetite. Griffonia is in fact used with good results as a natural antidepressant for the treatment of mild or moderate depression; in states of anxiety; in seasonal depressions and in insomnia, as it raises the levels of serotonin and even of melatonin, regularizing the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). The griffonia seeds also prove effective in situations where it is difficult to control the impulse of hunger, especially that aimed at sweets and carbohydrates. This is why it is used in cases where nervous and compulsive hunger must be regulated and rebalanced by a greater quantity of serotonin, which will inhibit the signal of hunger, considerably reducing the desire for sugars.
