Botanical name: Cichorium intybus                              Habitat: Mediterranean area

Plant parts used: leaves and roots                              Active ingredients and nutrients: Leaves: caffealartaric acid and sesquiterpenic lactones; Roots: 50% inulin dry weight, fructose polymer, sesquiterpenic lactones; Both: o.e, tannins, mucilages and resins

Therapeutic properties: Contains inulin, a fiber useful for digestion and intestinal regularity. This fiber arrives at the intestine, where it is fermented by the bacterial flora. It thus turns into fatty acids, including butyrate. These have positive effects on type II diabetes as they regulate the level of blood sugar and cholesterol, an action also favored by bitter principles present in the plant.
